Queens Wharf Interim Activation

Project Type: Interim Activation Strategy + Implementation Planning

Year: 2025-ongoing

Client: City of Newcastle

Reactivate is currently working with the City of Newcastle to shape an Interim Activation Strategy for Queens Wharf — a landmark waterfront site undergoing transformation in the city’s heart. Following the planned demolition of the western building in early 2026, the interim activation phase will play a critical role in re-establishing Queens Wharf as a vibrant civic destination while long-term redevelopment plans take shape.

Our work focuses on designing a balanced mix of active and passive uses for the site — from temporary markets and pop-ups to integrated art, seating, and landscaping — while ensuring safe, 24/7 public access. Drawing on best-practice placemaking, the strategy positions Queens Wharf as a lively, inclusive, and locally grounded space that supports economic and cultural vitality.

We are also supporting City of Newcastle with implementation planning, including feasibility of hybrid delivery models, operator engagement, and integration of temporary infrastructure. The strategy aligns with Council’s strategic drivers: connected public space, creative expression, economic innovation, and collaborative placemaking.

Currently in progress, the project is being delivered alongside enabling works and demolition planning, with activation scheduled to launch in mid–2026. The process has been deeply informed by contextual research, site analysis, and early engagement — and will continue to evolve in close partnership with Council, artists, and activation partners to bring this waterfront space back to life.
