Great to see the Committee for Sydney’s recent report on Sydney’s street food culture - celebrating how open-air dining, market stalls, and pop-up food experiences are shaping the city’s streets. It’s a timely look at how food animates public space, supports small operators, and strengthens the nighttime economy.

Our cofounder Andy contributed to this wonderful report and we’re proud to see two of our projects included — the Flour Mill of Summer Hill and The Langston at Epping - both demonstrating how thoughtful public realm design can foster vibrant food culture and community gathering.

Shaped by food led activation, simple permitting, and a focus on welcoming public space. In each of the project, street food and pop-up trading created early momentum, helped local operators test ideas, and gave residents a reason to visit, dwell, and return. Much of the long term retail leasing in these projects relied on the groundswell stemming from tactical, street-based food projects.

Sydney’s street food culture is world-class, it is generous, diverse, creative and city shaping. It belongs in the same global conversation as destinations like Los Angeles and Mexico City, with its own local character and community spirit.

For us, food has always been more than a meal—it’s a catalyst for cultural exchange, community, and local economic growth – indeed some of our earliest work was centred around community food programs and it was the platform from which Reactivate Consulting was born nearly ten years ago!
Congratulations to the Committee for Sydney and to all contributors to the report —what a brilliant celebration of the city’s evolving street life!
